Join the Team: Summer 2027 at Exit Glacier Guides

 

As winter sets in around Seward, Exit Glacier Guides is building our crew for the upcoming summer season. Guiding on a glacier isn’t a casual stroll outside—it is physically demanding, mentally challenging, and carries high responsibility. We expect our guides to show up fit, dependable, and calm under pressure.

 

In exchange, you spend the season in one of Alaska’s most breathtaking landscapes, build serious technical skills, and introduce guests to the ice for the first time.

 

What to Expect on the Ice

 

  • Physical Rigor: Hike 5–6+ miles daily on the steep, rocky Harding Icefield Trail (2,000+ ft elevation gain/loss) carrying a 35 lb pack.

  • All-Weather Operations: Long days outside through driving rain, wind, freezing cold, and direct sun.

  • Guest Safety & Care: Manage technical gear, lead groups through changing terrain, make sound risk decisions, and support guests who are exhausted or nervous.

  • Interpretation & Teamwork: Educate clients on local glaciology, maintain equipment, and communicate seamlessly with fellow guides and the office.

General Guide Qualifications

 

  • Certifications: Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) by mid-May 2027 (a local WFR/recert course runs in Seward this April—ask for details).

  • Driving: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • Experience & Mindset: Previous glacier travel, ice climbing, or comparable backcountry experience; basic belay and anchor knowledge preferred for entry-level roles. Humility, strong judgment, and exceptional work ethic are non-negotiable.

Open Positions

 

  • Lead Guide: Requires substantial climbing experience (rock or ice) and complete confidence building anchors and operating rescue systems. Must independently manage small groups safely and authoritatively on technical ice.

  • Assistant Guide / Intern: Requires climbing familiarity and backcountry hiking comfort. Backs up lead guides, supports guest logistics, and fills in for shuttle or office shifts when needed.

  • Office Staff: The operational backbone of our shop. Handles guest check-ins, reservations, and customer communication. Must be organized, articulate, and personable.

  • Shuttle Driver: A straightforward, low-stress driving role operating our hourly Exit Glacier shuttle. Must be 21+ with a clean driving record.
