This climbing experience is completely customized to your comfort level. This tour uses a helicopter to access the climbing area.

Helicopter Ice Climbing

This trip is designed for those visiting Seward, Alaska who either want a private Ice Climbing tour, or want to up the ante set by our other climbing trips with more difficulty, further remoteness (via helicopter), longer exploration, pushing the limits, etc. I could go on and on.

This tour is by far the guide favorite as the climbs we are able to access with the helicopter take glacier Ice Climbing to a new level. Experience fathomless moulins that echo. Climb beside waterfalls plunging into the unknown void. Or be content to climb at a moderate level in a completely remote and breathtaking environment customized for you.

The tour starts in the Seward airport where we load the helicopter. After take-off, we fly over Resurrection Bay and head over dramatic mountain canyons before landing on a moraine near the alpine glacier. Depending on the ability levels of individual clients, we are able to choose from a wide variety of climbs. We can either stick to the moderate walls on the glacier's surface, or we can head out in search of breathtaking — and very deep – moulins to drop into. We try to spend roughly 4 hours on the ice, climbing almost the entire time. After we finish climbing, the helicopter meets the group, loads up, and heads off though the canyons back to Seward. We feel strongly that this trip offers up some of the best summer ice-climbing that Alaska can offer.

For this tour, we provide all the necessary equipment excluding your clothing and camera. Enjoy!

Permitted with the Chugach National Forest.

Season:  May 25th-ish through September 8th

Safety on the Ice

Our guides go through extensive training before they run their own trips

Glaciers are an inherently dangerous environment, and Exit Glacier is no exception. We've had a perfect safety record for 14 years, because of the care and attention we give to the training of each of our guides. We don't have novice glacier guides leading our trips, ever. We don't take kayak or rafting guides, and turn them into glacier guides overnight.

We are the only company guiding on Exit Glacier that does not have officially documented unsafe and negligent guiding practices.

When you go on a glacier with us, you know that your lead guide has had years of experience glacier guiding, and that any assistant guide has undergone a rigorous training program and emergency skills assessment before they are allowed to work alongside our leads. No matter who you choose to take you on a glacier in Alaska, make sure that you ask that company about your guide's training on glaciers and their level of experience. When it comes to training and safety, not all glacier guiding companies are created equally.
